What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medical technique for unblocking chi (ch’i or qi) by inserting needles at particular points on the body to balance the opposing forces of yin and yang.  Chi is an energy that permeates all things.  It is believed to flow through the body along 14 main pathways called meridians.  When yin and yang are in harmony, chi flows freely within the body and a person is healthy.  When a person is sick, diseased, or injured, there is an obstruction of chi along one or more of the meridians.  Traditional Chinese medicine has identified some 500 specific points where needles are to be inserted for specific effects.

How does acupuncture work?

There are specific points along the meridians that can be stimulated to affect the flow of energy and functions of organs.  Stimulating these points restores the delicate balance and induces the healing process.  When energy flow is smooth and in balance, one is in health.  If the energy balance is disturbed, one will feel ill, or be in pain.

The scientific evidence:

Even though the exact mechanism by which acupuncture works is still not completely understood, there has been a great deal of research on the topic in recent years.  Research has shown acupuncture to be an effective form of treatment.  The following are a few widely accepted ideas about how acupuncture works.

1.  Endorphins are morphine-like substances produced in the brain.  Endorphins provide painkilling effect along with a sense of well-being.  According to biochemical and neurological research, acupuncture works by activating this natural pain-suppressing system in the brain.

2.  Studies demonstrate that acupuncture has an apparent effect of stimulating and strengthening the body’s immune system.  Acupuncture mobilizes the natural defense inside the human body, producing anti-inflammatory and anti-infectious results.

3.  Acupuncture is also used to regulate the body’s system as a whole.  For example, it is possible for acupuncture to affect the functioning of the autonomic nervous system.  The autonomic nervous system regulates unconscious functions such as your heartbeat, breathing, and digestion.  By affecting this system, it is possible to lower blood pressure, control asthma, and improve digestion without the potential side effects of drugs.
